Silver Smithing

Creating Silver Knot jewellery

Being a designer, it is really important to be able to translate ones vision into a design but it is equally important for a silversmith to be able to understand and create that vision into a product. Having the skills to make jewellery just opens doors to a lot of complex yet exciting designs that the designer can translate into actual products by being able to make them.

Shreeya starts of by looking out for inspirations, observing things around her and then creating a story around the elements that fascinate her. She then does an intensive research on the subject of interest studying its form, aesthetics and so on.

Sketching is the next step, shortlisting the best from the lot and then modelling with different material to get a better understanding of the product.

Experimentation has been the key. Pushing boundaries and using different tools and material has given way to the jewellery you see today. Depending on the design, Shreeya makes pieces directly from silver sheets and wire or by carving and moulding soft wax by hand which is later casted in sterling silver (92.5% purity). She then cleans the jewellery pieces through processes like filing, tumbling and pickling. Bits and pieces are assembled, linked and soldered to complete the piece. Excessive solder is filed and gemstones are set accordingly. Attention to details is always a top priority for Shreeya. She hand engraves on some of her designs.

She loves the outcome of making jewellery by hand as she believes that the beauty of a handmade piece is unmatched by any machine made product. Finally the jewellery goes through a round of final cleaning by tumbling and hand polishing before the products if required, goes for a round of plating. Plating helps add layers of gold, rose gold etc. to the jewellery depending on the design.

Taking Care of Your Silver Knot Jewellery

How to store Silver Knot Jewellery?

Always store in airtight zip lock and the pouch provided by us. Don’t mix it up with the other pieces of jewellery.

How to keep Silver Knot Jewellery Safe?

keep away from Perfumes, Soap, Water, Humidity, Moisture, Extreme temperature or anything acidic.

What is the Durability of the Jewellery?

It is delicate, handmade jewellery so make sure you handle it with utmost care. Do not bend, pull or use excessive force on it. We do not replace broken/damaged jewellery.

What to do if the plating wear off after some time?

In some collections (like Vihaang) we have use rose gold/ silver/ gold plating on 92.5% silver. If the plating does wear off over time you can either use it in silver as it is the base metal or you can get it re-plated as long as there are no gemstones set in the piece. We use soft natural gemstone beads, therefore they can lose out on their lustre or even crack in the re-plating process.
